Info

Equipment: Hiking boots, weatherproof clothing, beanie, sun protection, plenty of drinking water, and snacks. Tips: Before or after your hike, take time to wander through the quiet village of Karthaus, built directly within the walls of a 14th-century Carthusian monastery (Allerengelberg). Where to eat: Penaud-Alm (mountain pasture at 2,320 m offering authentic local alpine dishes)

Course: Karthaus (Start, 1,330 m) ➔ Gorfhof ➔ Road barrier ➔ Forest Road No. 20 ➔ Penaud Valley ➔ Penaud-Alm (2,320 m) ➔ Niederjöchl Pass (Destination & highest point, 2,664 m) ➔ Return via same route ➔ Karthaus

Along ancient pilgrimage paths from Karthaus to the panoramic pass overlooking the Martello Valley. Start in the historic monastery village of Karthaus (Certosa, 1,330 m). On foot or by car, follow the paved mountain road past the Gorfhof estate up to the forest road barrier (limited parking available). From here, hike along forest road No. 20, ascending gently but steadily. The path runs along the Penaud stream, taking you on a continuous climb through the long, scenic valley up to the Penaud Alm alpine hut (2,320 m). From the hut, continue climbing across high alpine meadows and increasingly rocky terrain. Follow the trail up to the Niederjöchl pass (2,664 m). Reaching the crest, your long ascent is rewarded with spectacular panoramic views extending far into the Martello Valley and across the glaciated peaks of the Ortler-Cevedale group. After taking in the sights, return along the same route back down to Karthaus.
